Our August 2024 HR Roundtable was an AI “eye-opener”. Unlocking the Power of AI.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming industries and challenging traditional business practices. Insights shared during a recent Harvest HR Roundtable workshop by Kelly Brough (Accenture) and Dawid Naude (Pathfindr) revealed AI’s incredible potential, its implications for businesses, and how leaders can navigate this paradigm shift effectively.

Kelly and David shared insightful perspectives on AI and the workplace. The discussion highlighted the importance of data security and models in the era of AI, emphasising the need for a strategic approach.

Elements included the significance of leading with value in addressing business processes, examples of GenAI in practice for customer onboarding, and reimagining work our workers do in a non-linear manner with AI’s assistance at various stages. The integration of AI agents and copilots was discussed as a means to enhance productivity and assist employees in different task categories.

Moreover, the conversation delved into responsible AI practices, stressing the importance of designing and deploying AI solutions ethically to build trust and value. The session underscored the need for regular data testing, aligning policies with AI initiatives, and fostering a culture of responsible AI use within organisations.

AI and the Innovator’s Dilemma

The rapid development of AI echoes the challenges outlined in Clayton Christensen’s influential book, The Innovator’s Dilemma. Businesses must embrace disruptive technologies like AI to remain competitive, while balancing the risks associated with early adoption. Organisations that fail to adapt risk falling behind in an increasingly dynamic landscape.

Security in AI: Safeguarding Data and Models

With AI becoming more prevalent, ensuring the security of data and models is paramount. Whether using tools like ChatGPT or hosting proprietary AI on platforms such as Microsoft Azure, businesses must adopt strong security measures. Critical considerations include:

  • Protecting sensitive data from breaches.
  • Ensuring the integrity of AI models to prevent misuse.
  • Conducting regular audits to keep policies up to date.

Unlocking ChatGPT’s Potential

ChatGPT is revolutionising workflows, and its success hinges on crafting great prompts—context is key. Organisations can maximise its utility by:

  1. Adopting Paid Versions: Professional tools like Teams or Enterprise editions offer enhanced functionality and security.
  2. Hosting Custom AI Models: Platforms like Microsoft Azure enable secure, customised AI applications within organisational frameworks.

For businesses using free tools, understanding the trade-offs is essential—free services may use your data for training purposes. Adjusting privacy settings, like those in ChatGPT, can help minimise exposure.

Productivity Gains

ChatGPT enhances productivity across various tasks such as drafting, research, and content refinement. Statistics shared during the workshop highlighted:

  • A 43% productivity boost for underperforming tasks.
  • Mid-level performers benefit the most, while top performers are freed up for higher-value responsibilities.

Examples of ChatGPT in action:

  • Automating data capture during order processing.
  • Streamlining workflows for customer onboarding.

Reimagining Workflows with AI

AI goes beyond automating individual tasks—it redefines entire workflows. Instead of simply enhancing specific steps, AI can optimise processes holistically.

For example:

  • AI agents perform singular, focused tasks, while copilots prioritise and augment human decision-making.
  • This shift creates a “Human + AI” model, where humans make strategic decisions and AI enhances operational efficiency.

Embracing Non-Linear Workflows

AI disrupts traditional, linear workflows by:

  • Automating routine tasks.
  • Enabling AI agents to manage specialised responsibilities.
  • Empowering teams with copilots to focus on priorities and smarter decision-making.

Responsible AI: Building Trust

With great power comes great responsibility. Organisations must implement ethical AI systems to ensure accountability and trustworthiness. Key strategies include:

  • Regularly testing AI data and models for accuracy.
  • Establishing ethical guidelines and acceptable use policies.
  • Shifting the mindset from “The computer must be right” to “Let’s validate this information.”

AI should complement human judgment, not replace it. Regular updates to policies will ensure AI remains relevant and reliable.

As the landscape evolves, leaders are encouraged to embrace AI as a tool for innovation and productivity gains with predicted gains to the Australian economy in the order of $300 billion in the next 15 years. The discussion also touched on the upcoming iPhone 16+ release featuring AI capabilities, alongside insights on GPT4 and its transformative potential in various sectors.

AI’s Economic Potential

AI is poised to unlock $300 billion in economic value through productivity gains. By reducing barriers for startups, AI enables smaller teams to handle tasks like website development, legal support, and graphic design. Cutting-edge tools like GPT-4 are levelling the playing field, making AI accessible to businesses of all sizes.

Getting Started with AI

To begin your AI journey:

  1. Start Small: Automate simple, routine tasks.
  2. Think Big: Explore how general AI can tackle complex challenges.
  3. Use Existing Frameworks: Leverage industry frameworks like those from Sequoia Capital to guide implementation.

AI is not just a technological advancement—it’s a shift in mindset. By embracing responsible practices and rethinking traditional workflows, businesses can unlock the full potential of AI and position themselves as leaders in the AI revolution.

For those looking to embark on their AI journey, the session recommended starting with general AI tools (ChatGPT and Co-pilot) for routine tasks as low-hanging fruit and exploring the scope of specific AI tools for more complex work.

With AI reshaping industries, it’s crucial for organisations to adapt, innovate, and align their strategies with the evolving AI landscape to unlock new opportunities.

This session from the Harvest HR Roundtable underscores the significance of AI in shaping the future of work and business strategy. The journey may be complex, but the rewards are transformative. Let’s get started!
