Harvest Geelong is offering Accredited Mental First Aid Training, a must for every workplace.

Mental illness is very common.

Australian statistics indicate that one in five Australians have a diagnosed mental health condition in any one year. In addition, 45% of Australians will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime.*

The most common mental illnesses are depression, anxiety and substance use disorder. These three types of mental illnesses often occur in combination. For example, a person with an anxiety disorder could also develop depression, or a person with depression might misuse alcohol or other drugs, in an effort to self-medicate. Inevitably, this impacts the workplace.

In a 2019 Geelong HR Roundtable on Mental Health and Mental Injury in the workplace presenter, Martin Reid, Coulter Roache Lawyers, revealed that work related mental injury is the 2nd most common cause of Workers Compensation Claims in Australia. Serious Mental Health issues cost Australian Businesses $10.9 billion every year in absenteeism, reduced productivity, and compensation claims.

Having a Mental Health First Aid Trained officer in your workplace can improve the Work Safe statistics of Mental Health related claims.

As an employer, it’s your responsibility to address mental health in the workplace and ideally have someone trained in Mental Health First Aid.

Why you need an accredited Mental Health First Aid officer in your organisation.

Many people feel uncomfortable and unprepared when thinking about starting a conversation about mental health.

A Mental Health First Aid course gives you the skills and confidence to approach someone in need. When a First Aider develops an understanding of Mental Health issues they also build their empathy and capacity to help others.

The benefits of this supportive approach can be seen at an individual, organisational and financial level.
